Spiritual? Religious? Restless?
We were very honored to host Rev Dr Linda Mercadante, Professor of Historical Theology at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, and a national expert and speaker on the “Spiritual but not Religious” phenomenon. Dr Mercadante preached during our May 18th 10:30 am worship experience, then taught a lunch workshop.
Dr Mercadante’s new book, Belief without Borders: Inside the Minds of the Spiritual but not Religious, has won national acclaim, and she is a sought after speaker. We are privileged to host her for this important event, as we seek to grow into the vital vision God has for St John’s Church in this day and age.
Linda Mercadante grew up a "Jewish-Italian-Catholic" Jersey girl in Newark, NJ. Since her mixed-faith immigrant parents banned religion at home, Linda became an early "spiritual but not religious" seeker. After trying many spiritual alternatives, including a stint as an atheist, she eventually found a spiritual home and is now a theology professor and minister. Linda’s research on "SBNRs" won the prestigious Henry Luce III Fellowship in Theology. She has written numerous books and articles, and she has been quoted extensively in the national media on spiritual and theological matters. Linda was recently profiled in The Columbus Dispatch "Theology professor advises faiths on reaching ‘spiritual but not religious’"by JoAnne Viviano.
